Photoionization cross-sections out of the fine-structure levels (2S(2)2p(4) P-3(2,0,1)) of the O-like Fe ion Fe XIX have been reinvestigated. Data for photoionization out of each of these finestructure levels have been obtained, where the calculations have been performed with and without the inclusion of radiation damping on the resonance structure in order to assess the importance of this process. Recombination rate coefficients are determined using the Milne relation, for the case of an electron recombining with N-like Fe ions (Fe XX) in the ground state to form O-like Fe (Fe XIX) existing in each of the fine- structure ground-state levels. Recombination rates are presented over a temperature range similar to 4.0 less than or equal to log T-e less than or equal to 7.0, of importance to the modelling of X-ray emission plasmas.

We show that a dense spectrum of chaotic multiply excited eigenstates can play a major role in collision processes involving many-electron multicharged ions. A statistical theory based on chaotic properties of the eigenstates enables one to obtain relevant energy-averaged cross sections in terms of sums over single-electron orbitals. Our calculation of low-energy electron recombination of Au25+ shows that the resonant process is 200 times more intense than direct radiative recombination, which explains the recent experimental results of Hoffknecht [J. Phys. B 31, 2415 (1998)].

We present results of a study of the effect of target polarization on electron-ion recombination, and show that coherent radiation by the target electrons gives a large contribution to the recombination rate. It significantly modifies the nonresonant photorecombination background. A procedure has been devised whereby this contribution can be evaluated together with the conventional radiative recombination, independently of the dielectronic recombination component. Numerical results are presented for Zn2+, Cd2+, Sn4+, and Xe8+, showing up to an order-of-magnitude enhancement.

We have studied the dielectronic recombination process in He-like Fe ions and have obtained the resonant strengths of the KLn (3 less than or equal to, n less than or equal to, 5) resonances. This measurement was performed with the use of an electron beam ion trap by measuring the x-ray energy emitted from highly charged ions simultaneously with the electron beam energy scanned during the measurement. The total resonant strengths obtained are 5.0 x 10(-19), 2.1 x 10(-19) and 1.1 X 10(-19) cm(2) eV, for KLM, KLN and KLO, respectively.

We discuss a parity nonconserving asymmetry in the cross section of KLL dielectronic recombination of polarized electrons on the hydrogenlike ions with Z less than or similar to 60. This effect is strongly enhanced because of the near degeneracy of doubly excited 2l2l(') states of opposite parity in He-like ions. For ions with Z similar to 30 the asymmetry is of the order of 10(-9). For Z approximate to 48 a level crossing takes place, leading to the PNC asymmetry of -1.3x10(-8), which is 10(8) times greater than the basic strength of the weak interaction in atoms.

We investigate the role of dynamic polarization of the target electrons in the process of recombination of electrons with multicharged ions (polarizational recombination). Numerical calculations carried out for a number of Ni- and Ne-like ions demonstrate that the inclusion of polarizational recombination leads to a noticeable increase (up to 30%) in the cross sections for incident electron energies outside the regions of dielectronic resonances. We also present a critical analysis of theoretical approaches used by other authors to describe the phenomenon of polarizational recombination.

We have determined resonant strengths of the KLn (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonances for helium-like Ti ions and (3 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonances for helium-like Fe ions. The results were obtained using the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. Characteristic X-rays from both dielectronic recombination and radiative recombination were detected as the electron beam energy was scanned through the resonances. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Dielectronic recombination (DR) has been studied in highly charged He-like Ti ions using an electron beam ion trap. X-rays emitted from radiative recombination (RR) and DR were observed as the electron beam energy was scanned through the resonances. Differential DR resonant strengths were determined by normalizing the DR x-ray intensity to the RR intensity using theoretical RR cross sections. KLn (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonant strengths were determined for He-like Ti ions. The differential resonant strengths were calibrated without reference to any theoretical DR calculations while the electron energy scale was derived with reference to the well-known energy for ionization of the He-like and H-like ions from the ground state. Calibration in this way facilitates a more exacting comparison between theory and experiment than has been reported previously. To facilitate this comparison, total and differential theoretical resonance strengths were calculated. These calculations were found to be in good agreement with the measured results.

Decay dynamics of dielectronic recombination (DR) processes of H-like titanium ions was investigated with an electron beam ion trap. In the DR of H-like ions a K-shell vacancy is available even after the decay of the doubly excited state produced by the recombination. Therefore secondary X-ray emission is possible. An observed X-ray spectrum of DR obtained in the present experiment was well reproduced theoretically by taking into account the secondary X-rays. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

KLL dielectronic recombination resonances, where a free electron is captured into the L shell and at the same time a K shell electron is excited into the L shell, have been measured for open shell iodine ions by measuring the detected yield of escaping ions of various charge states and modeling the charge balance in an electron beam ion trap. In the modeling, the escape from the trap and multiple charge exchange were considered. Extracted ions were used to measure the charge balance in the trap. The different charge states were clearly separated, which along with the correction for artifacts connected with ion escape and multiple charge exchange made the open shell highly charged ion measurements of this type possible for the first time. From the measured spectra resonant strengths were obtained. The results were 4.27(39)x10(-19) cm(2) eV, 2.91(26)x10(-19) cm(2) eV, 2.39(22)x10(-19) cm(2) eV, 1.49(14)x10(-19) cm(2) eV and 7.64(76)x10(-20) cm(2) eV for the iodine ions from He-like to C-like, respectively.

Electron-ion recombination in a laser-induced electron recollision is of fundamental importance as the underlying mechanism responsible for the generation of high harmonic radiation, and hence for the production of attosecond pulse trains in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral regions. By using an ion beam target, remotely prepared to be partially in long-lived excited states, the recombination process has for the first time been directly observed and studied.
